Spider-Man 4 Will Finally Introduce Two Classic Spider-Man Characters To The MCU In Marvel Theory
Summary
- Spider-Man 4 presents the perfect opportunity for the MCU to introduce essential characters like Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy, adding depth to Spider-Man's world.
- The inclusion of Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn as Peter's new friends would preserve the impact of his sacrifice in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and offer fresh dynamics and storylines.
- By focusing on Spider-Man characters and developing a more grounded story, Spider-Man 4 could bring back the relatability that has been lacking in previous MCU Spider-Man films. It also sets up the potential introduction of a major villain like Norman Osborn.
There are still some pretty essential Spider-Man characters that the MCU has yet to introduce, but
Spider-Man 4 seems like the perfect time to do it. As of now, the MCU Spider-Man movies have split their attention between Peter Parker's personal life and the wider Marvel universe. Following Doctor Strange's spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Avengers have forgotten about Spider-Man, so he is perfectly positioned to have an adventure without their interference. This has led to some speculation that Marvel will include some fan favorite characters,
specifically Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy.
In many Spider-Man stories, Harry Osborn is Peter's best friend. In the comics, Gwen Stacy is hugely important to Peter Parker's development. Gwen was Peter's first wife, and failing to save her was one of his biggest tragedies. Now that
MCU Spider-Man will seemingly be forced to make new friends in the plot of Spider-Man 4, it seems like the perfect time to introduce these important people in Peter's life. This will not only add fan-favorite characters to the MCU timeline, but also help round out Spider-Man's corner of the world with more characters that are just in his stories.
Marvel Theory Explained: Gwen Stacy & Harry Osborn Will Finally Join The MCU

Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Peter Parker ready to strike out on his own,
creating several opportunities for him to meet new characters. If Peter is still planning to attend college, he could also be looking for an internship, which is a natural way to introduce Oscorp. Peter could easily meet Harry on the job, or run into him at the building and strike up a conversation. This would help advance Peter's story while easily giving Harry a reason to be part of his life. Peter might even overlook some red flags about the Osborns if Harry is the first new friend he makes.
In the original comics, Gwen Stacy is introduced as a science major at Empire State University, which would be a perfect way for her to meet Peter. Alternatively, Peter could meet Gwen through her father, Captain George Stacy. With Aunt May gone and Peter cut off from his other support networks, he may be looking for an adult to serve as a parental figure.
Getting close with the Stacy family would help give Peter some stability and a new mentor that isn't an Avenger.
Why Gwen Stacy & Harry Osborn Are So Important To Peter Parker's Story Close Spider-Man 4 has a very specific problem to solve right now:
Peter needs to have a supporting cast of friends, but if Marvel immediately brings back MJ and Ned, it will cheapen No Way Home's ending. Luckily, Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn are the perfect solution to this problem. Introducing them gives Peter new friends to interact with and preserves the impact of his sacrifice in the previous movie. Gwen and Harry would also be a good fit because they could simultaneously fill the roles of Peter's friends while also feeling distinct from them.
If the MCU sticks with Gwen Stacy's science background, she could easily take over for Ned as Peter's "person in the chair." Their dynamic wouldn't feel like a rehash of Peter and Ned's relationship, since the romantic tension between them would add a new layer. Harry, on the other hand, is almost more similar to Peter's rival, Flash Thompson, than either of his friends. Harry is wealthy and also traditionally neglected by his dad, similar to Flash in the MCU. This could make Peter initially nervous around Harry, but eventually come to be his friend.
Spider-Man 4 Could Deliver Marvel Stories MCU Fans Have Been Missing

Tony Stark loomed so large over Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home that they
didn't always feel like Peter Parker's story. Spider-Man: No Way Home brought in Doctor Strange and the other Spider-Men, again taking the focus away from just the MCU's Peter Parker. Spider-Man 4 has the chance to create a story based fully on Spider-Man characters. This would help keep the focus on Peter and develop a world around him. This would also help Marvel make Peter Parker into the type of character that made him popular in the first place.
A huge part of
Spider-Man's appeal as a character comes from how relatable he is. Up until now, that has been somewhat lacking in the MCU because of the grand scale of his adventures. By replacing Avengers with characters like Gwen and Harry, Marvel could set up a more grounded story in Spider-Man 4. This would also fit into the plans to have Kingpin potentially be Spider-Man 4's villain, as he would be a street-level threat. He would also be a direct thorn in the side of a police captain like George Stacy, creating a more personal connection.
Spider-Man 4 Could Set Up The MCU's Green Goblin

While adding Harry Osborn would be a good move for keeping Spider-Man 4 more self-contained, it would also be a good move for the wider MCU. With Jonathan Majors out as Kang, the MCU might have an opening for a major villain in the near future.
Harry's father, Norman Osborn AKA the Green Goblin, seems like a good candidate for a replacement. While he isn't as cosmic of a threat as Kang, Norman has been a major threat in the comics before. Norman would also fit in nicely with some of the ongoing storylines in movies like Marvel's Thunderbolts, since he's connected to the team in the comics.
Norman Osborn was for a period of time the leader of the Thunderbolts, which has led to speculation that the MCU could introduce its main iteration of the character in the upcoming movie.
Thunderbolts already includes potential members of the Dark Avengers, a team Norman has assembled before. Bullseye, who will reportedly be joining the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again, also posed as Hawkeye on the team. If Marvel wants to set up a team of villains to oppose the Avengers, Norman Osborn could be the man to do it, as this would also give Peter his own nemesis instead of borrowing another Green Goblin. With all of this in mind,
Spider-Man 4 opens a lot of possibilities for Marvel, and a new villain is just one of the most interesting of them.
